SPORE to be released Sep 7th, 2008
The long awaited video game Spore is set to be released September 7th, 2008. The game, created by Will Wright (of Sim City and The Sims fame) looks excellent.
From the Spore website:
"From the mind of Will Wright, the creator of The Sims, comes SPORE™, an epic journey that takes you from the origin and evolution of life through the development of civilization and technology and eventually all the way into the deepest reaches of outer space."
You control a species from a cellular level and help it evolve into a culture bent on intergalactic conquest. At each step of the process, you have control of the aesthetics.

Most of the objects you encounter are created by you or other players, including creatures, houses, cities, spaceships and planets. Also, most of the game elements involve procedural generation, which allows that awesome three legged, sharp toothed monster you create to walk, move, eat and generally behave like an awesome three legged, sharp toothed monster.

Fans of vinyl toys may be interested in the character creator. It looks simple and intuitive and offers a huge range of possibility. I also expect that a service will be set up to allow you to print physical 3d models of your in-game creatures. (A similar service is offered that allows World of Warcraft players to make figures from their online characters: Figureprints.com)
There are a ton of videos on youtube and google video if you are interested.
Release dates are always tentative, but if all goes well, I will be calling in sick on the 7th.
