Hyperlinks

Here are a few websites I like.

Levitated.net - Jared Tarbell's site with lots of awesome flash work. Be sure to check out the open source section.

Avoision.com - More flash experiments

53os - Web art. Way too hard to describe, way too good to miss.

Paperrad.org - The site of the truly rad art collective Paper Rad. Full of videos and images. Not for the epileptic.

I'll put some more links up soon. We just got in a huge shipment of books I need to price. If you think I should see a page that you think is awesome, please link to it in a comment.

Ghostjuice Youtube Channel

In addition to this blog, I have a collection of my favorite youtube videos. Now, please notice I didn't say "good youtube videos," although some are quite good. I often add really shitty, or just plain bizarre videos because they exist, or I really like them. With that in mind, you can check it out here:

www.youtube.com/ghostjuice

A friend of mine also adds to the channel, so if you see any videos about Nietzsche or something, it was probably him who added it.

If you have any links you think I should see, let me know in the comments section.

"How to Speak Sexy English" (NSFW)

SPORE to be released Sep 7th, 2008

The long awaited video game Spore is set to be released September 7th, 2008. The game, created by Will Wright (of Sim City and The Sims fame) looks excellent.

From the Spore website:

"From the mind of Will Wright, the creator of The Sims, comes SPORE™, an epic journey that takes you from the origin and evolution of life through the development of civilization and technology and eventually all the way into the deepest reaches of outer space."

You control a species from a cellular level and help it evolve into a culture bent on intergalactic conquest. At each step of the process, you have control of the aesthetics.

Most of the objects you encounter are created by you or other players, including creatures, houses, cities, spaceships and planets. Also, most of the game elements involve procedural generation, which allows that awesome three legged, sharp toothed monster you create to walk, move, eat and generally behave like an awesome three legged, sharp toothed monster.

Fans of vinyl toys may be interested in the character creator. It looks simple and intuitive and offers a huge range of possibility. I also expect that a service will be set up to allow you to print physical 3d models of your in-game creatures. (A similar service is offered that allows World of Warcraft players to make figures from their online characters: Figureprints.com)

There are a ton of videos on youtube and google video if you are interested.

Release dates are always tentative, but if all goes well, I will be calling in sick on the 7th.

Make a steadycam for 14 bucks

In keeping with today's movie making theme, here is a link to a page on making a cheap, effective steadycam. The site features an excellent tutorial and a bunch of videos that show the steadycam in action.

www.steadycam.org

From the website:
"Steadycams (or camera stabilizers) are attachments used to capture smooth looking video even when the camera and camera operator are in motion. The camera operator may walk (or even jog), move through tight hallways and doorways, and even climb up and down stairs without shaking the camera. Unfortunately, professional steadycams cost around $1500. Even the cheap 3rd party ones cost $600+. Not exactly a bargain considering many of us use cameras in that price range. So, I decided to make my own version. It turns out, it only costs $14. Not too bad. And I'll show you how to build your own right here."

If you don't want to make one yourself, you can buy a premade steadycam for the website's author, Johnny Lee, for about 40 bucks plus shipping.

Johnny Lee has done some other incredible projects which can be seen on his personal website. In the future I will highlight some his work with the Nintendo Wii remote. He really does some amazing work.

Awesome DIY special effects for the zombie/slasher/scifi movie you are working on

So you are working on your latest epic film, Realm of the Bloodthirsty Hypersluts 2000: Revenge of the Serpent, and you need a realistic decapitation effect (you know, for when the pilot of the second ship is seduced and then beheaded by the Head Madame's Lazer Snake), but you blew most of your budget on weed and Russ Meyer DVDs (for inspiration dude). What do you do?

You should check out Indy Mogul. Their youtube page is full of awesome special effect how-to videos for filmmakers on a budget. Want to make a chainsaw hand a la Evil Dead ? How about a hole in the chest or a smashed head? They've got you covered. And they have tons of other effects too. Their website has some extra videos and a support forum.
