Ready to waste some time?
And boy do I have a good way to do it.
Yoshio Ishii is seriously awesome. His site, www.nekogames.jp , has tons of innovative, quirky and fun flash games. Best of all, they are all free. The site is in Japanese, but that shouldn't stop you from exploring it. Most games are easy to pick up, and learning the mechanics is half of the fun.
I'll start with my favorite(s) of the bunch.

The basic goal of Hoshi Saga is to find the star hidden in each level. In fact, that is all you are gonna get by way of instructions. The appeal of the game is discovering how to find each star, as every level is different and creative. The games feature amazing graphics and design. What at first seems like a minimal composition, soon turns into real physical objects as you begin interacting with the screen.
I highly recommend this to fans of smart, economical design as well as fans of the WarioWare series.
So far, there are three installments in the series. Part three was just released recently. Collectively, there are now 100 puzzles in the series.
(If for some reason, a minigame is a bit buggy or unresponsive, try going back to the menu and reloading it. Also, you can return to the main menu and not lose your progress.)

Hoshi Saga 2
Hoshi Saga 3

This was the first game of his I was introduced to, and I instantly fell in love with it.
The aim of the game is to get to the sixteenth floor. Sounds easy enough, but of course there is a catch. Every move your mouse cursor makes is recorded. So when you run out of time on cursor number one, and begin the life of cursor two, the movements of cursor one are on screen with you. (It's difficult to explain, but easy to grasp.) In order to reach the 16th floor, you have to use each cursor in cooperation with the other cursors. (The "Cooperate with oneself" from the title screen)
Cursor*10

I found this one as I was working on the write up. It is a straightforward, classic horizontally-scrolling shooter. Simple and addictive old school fun.
SCRXXX AS3
I do hope you will give at least one of them a try.
And a big thank you to Mr. Yoshio Ishii. I am a huge fan.
(As I was trying to find his bio, I found a cool write up that Rock, Paper, Shotgun did about his work. It details a few more games too. Check it out here)
